Yes, I know that the largest Polonia is in Chicago. No, down here there is almost nobody. We moved here in 1992 on account of an invitation for my parents to teach French (they are French teachers).
I also did Wheelock's but it won't grant you mastery of the language. If you really want to know the language, you'd have to learn to speak it. I currently am finishing Adler's textbook, which is found on latinum.mypodcast.com, a site replete with Latin audio and exercises. You have no idea how much that site has contributed to my knowledge of the language. I even chat with people in Latin sometimes.
