Hi, Iʼm new here, and just found this thread. To address some questions/points that came up: Russian is phonemic. As is my mother's tongue (note genitive), Hungarian, and probably most other languages. Certainly all new world languages are highly ...

This is all very interesting, Maximilianus. Comparative linguistics is a truly fascinating subject. What can I say...I'm thrilled! Verba mihi deficiunt. It is amazing how languages affect each other, and I think, that in turn affects people. Is it...

Hi Mat, sorry this took long. Revisiting things we had once left behind truly seems to have a different impact on us, and this is due to the fact that at least to some point we are not exactly the same persons we used to be back then. It happened...

Good to hear I peaked your interest about the sagas. I remember reading Njal's saga a long time, but to tell you the truth, I don't really remember nor was very attracted to it. Maybe if I read it now it would all come back to me with a different ...

Interesting detail. Mattheus said:Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that I have noticed over the course of finding those pdf book files, that most of the pre-XIXth century Latinists were mostly Germans. But English and French aren't lacking.

Sorry for not replying before; been busy with some inevitable stuff. The top of my head is actually crowded, so I get phonemics out of the bottom of it (hahaha just kidding). The truth is that sometimes I forget some concepts; that’s why I never ...

A little humility always does some good. Besides, where do these chaps get these crazy ideas? Are they too obtuse to notice the difference between these words?

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. If you don't mind my asking, did you write this all from the top of your head? If so, you're the man, Max! Homographs, homonyms, and homophones. French is weakly phonemic. It has many silent letters. Itali...

You see, Mattheus, you never heard of the term “phonemic” for almost the same reason why almost anybody didn’t. The term is quite rare amongst common people; being more exclusive of persons such as philologists and linguists for whom on the contra...

I can't tell much about German. Certainly not my field... so... what's est in German, Lepus? Lepus is right about homonyms, Mat. Read my next post, please. I talk a little about phonemics on it.

I just started listening to all the podcasts from latinum not too long ago. That is actually how I found this site. Thanks for the advice on adler's. I'll be sure to check that out.
I hope to be able to find people who I can chit chat locally with in Latin sooner or later. First thing I wan to do is get up on my writing and thinking in Latin so soon I'll start corresponding here using Latin.

Salve,
Yeah, I am of Polish descent. There's a ton of us in Metro-Detroit. Unfortunately I don't speak any Polish, as of now Latin is the only language I know much of. I do my studies from Wheelock's Latin. I'm on Chapter 23.
My interest in Latin is mostly due to the fact that I want to get into graduate school for medieval history.
I'm really excited to have come by this place where other people who enjoy Latin are.
When did your family make it over here? Mine came not too long before the First World War. My Great grandfather made the trip across several times before he finally moved the family over here. If you're interested in Polish-American history I know a person/place or two I can point you too. I don't know how much Polish culture or history is down in Louisiana, but we have quite a bit here in Detroit. A ton of us migrated here from the old country.
Talk to you Later,

Vale
