The Poets in Rome early formed themselves into a Guild or College.
Those of us interested in oral Latin - the existence of Latin-only meetings are important, but a different kind of meeting, where Latin is used for reciting, and declaiming, would be useful, and less intimidating for newcomers - a group where no knowledge of Latin is required for membership, but where the group centers around Latin, and Latinity.
I have an idea - I discussed it in outline with Cordus at last meeting of the Circulus Latinus here in London - - that we set up our own little "Collegium Poetarum". I got this idea from the first Bardic Guild set up in Cornwall, founded in the late 1800's, that lead to the ultimate revival of that language. The idea, would be, that such a series of little groups could easily be replicated - no great skill in spoken Latin is needed, membership does not require knowledge of Latin, but such a group can be a seed, from which a plant can grow....
It is obvious to me that the format of the Latin-only groups is simply too intimidating - and so they grow incrementally, if at all. Something more open, more accessible, is needed, something more familiar - the world of text, be it fables, oratory, epistles, whatever.
My intention is this: that we meet here in London, possibly once every other month, somewhere public, and recite poetry, oratory, fables, epistles, whatever takes our fancy, out loud, in public, in Latin. - possibly after a stiff drink......
